Variant ID is a unique identifier that helps you track and administer your store’s inventory. It allows you to track products out of stock, orders canceled or amended, and more. You can also generate reports that show sales related to specific variants or products within your store.

What are the guidelines for submitting a Google Shopping Product ID?

Here are the guidelines for submitting a Product ID:-

  • For each specific product, provide a unique ID.
  • For each product, use a unique identifier. The product is identified by its ID, which tracks its performance in Merchant Center and Google Ads. In addition, the ID identifies it and helps Google retrieve data. Don’t change the ID assigned to a product once you’ve done so. Your product’s history will be overwritten if you change the ID.
  • Target the same product to different countries or languages, using the same ID in each case.
    • Use the identical ID for a product shared in each supported language, such as German, French, and Italian, if you target a multilingual country like Switzerland.
    • Use the identical ID for a product shared between countries if you want to target multiple countries, such as the United States of America and Canada.
  • Don’t make IDs stand out by using casing. While Merchant Center product IDs are case-sensitive, two products with the same product ID but different casings may be considered the same. These proposals may be confused in Google Ads filtering, or there might be problems matching them across supplementary and primary feeds, for example, if you submit ID “xyz123” for one product and ID “XYZ123” for another. To differentiate products, use unique letter and number combinations rather than the casing.
  • Use a different id for multiple products. For example:
    • Refrain from using an ID for distinct goods in the same target market or language.
    • For products with variants, don’t reuse an ID. Each product needs its identification, so each variation is unique.
    • If you sell a “promotion of the day,” don’t reuse an ID. IDs are tied to a product, not a promotion.
    • Refrain from using identification for new goods. Don’t use that product’s ID for any other product, even if you’re no longer selling it or it’s out of stock.
  • Avoid whitespace wherever possible. White spaces will be automatically removed in a row, and white spaces before and after the ID.
  • Only submit valid Unicode letters. During the encoding of your file, these characters are typically added. Use UTF-8 encoding to avoid them. Submit files in a compressed format to help minimize encoding problems. The following Unicode characters are examples of invalid ones:
    • Control characters (for example, U+200D)
    • Function characters
    • Private area characters
    • Surrogate pairs
    • Unassigned code points
