Shopify being an eCommerce, supports many different types of businesses. The users can see physical products, electronic goods, and drop-ship products (as long as the products are not illegal).

You’ll come across many products on Shopify, including handcrafted goods, beauty supplies, home products, outdoor gear, clothing, digital products, events, online classes, eBooks, gift cards, personal care, sports goods, etc.

As long as the products do not fall under illegal categories, you can pretty much sell anything on Shopify. Some unlawful or prohibited items include fireworks, alcohol, e-cigarettes, tobacco, CDB, drugs, firearms and weapons, and video game currency.

Cuppow is an excellent example of how a small company with the simple idea of making reusable and eco-friendly containers reaches out to its target market through Shopify.

What does powered by Shopify mean?

When individual merchants or businesses create their store on Shopify, there is a text at the bottom of the store’s footer that says “Powered by Shopify.”

Shopify is the platform on which the eCommerce store is built and customized, and the footer text serves to let the visitors know that the store was made on Shopify.

There are advantages and disadvantages to having this text at the footer. Firstly, a core aspect of conversion is trust. A new business launching its store online without much or any reputation can benefit significantly from familiar names, logos, or well-known payment methods.

Customers often form an opinion about the store within seconds of opening the landing page, and it substantially influences their purchase decision.

Having the “powered by Shopify” at the bottom will have them associated with a well-known brand such as Shopify and act as a form of social proof that helps them feel more secure about their purchase.

On the other hand, many store owners do not want to have anything on their footer for aesthetics or to keep it clean from links.

Sometimes it can also lead customers to think it’s a dropshipping store and move on to find better deals elsewhere. Removing the ‘Powered by Shopify’ at the footer is a good idea to build their authentic brand image for many businesses.

How to Remove ‘Powered By Shopify’?

There are two ways to remove powered by Shopify from the footer of your store. One is called the “Easy” method, and the other is the “Hard” way. The easy way is for everyone who uses Shopify and has a simple-to-follow procedure.

The hard way is what you will have to pick in case the easy way doesn’t work. In essence, they’re both simple, but the hard way will give you definite results.

Method#1: easy & Beginner-friendly one (Via Edit Language Option)

Step 1: Log in to your Shopify account to access the online store. On the left-hand side menu under the online store, click on themes to open the page.

Step 2: On the right side of the page, under Debut, you’ll find the drop-down menu labeled “actions.” Click on it and select the “Edit Languages” option.

Step: 3 Opening the languages page, look for the ‘Filter’ search bar at the top of the page and type “powered.” Scroll down a bit until you find the fields’ Checkout & system / Links’ and ‘General / Password page.’

Step 4: To remove “Powered by Shopify” from the sore footer, go to the ‘Check out $ System / Links’ field and erase the text. You can also type anything else you wish to type here or leave it blank if you want your footer to be empty. Next, scroll down to the General / Password page and delete the text you see there. You can also add a new message that you want on the password page.

Once you’re done, scroll back up to the top of the page and hit the ‘Save’ button on the top right.

Method#2: Hard & Technical one (Via Edit Code Option)

The second method is your best choice in case the first doesn’t work. Since this “hard” method involves a bit of technicality in accessing the footer code of the page, it can seem intimidating if you’re unfamiliar. But if you follow these instructions, it’s simple enough.

Step 1: The first step is the same as the last method and starts with going to the Themes page. Under the Actions drop-down menu, go to “edit code’ and click on it.

Step 2: On the left-hand side of the menu, scroll down until you find ‘sections’ and click on it to expand. Under the drop-down items, locate the ‘footer.liquid’ file and click on it.

Step 3: This is where it gets a little tricky. While on the footer.liquid editor press Ctrl+F or Cmd+F to open search and look for the tag: {{powered_by_link}}.

Step 4: Within the footer.liquid file deletes all occurrences of this tag, and the “powered by Shopify” message in the footer will be removed. To remove the text from your password page, search the password-footer.liquid file similar to the last file. Delete the highlighted tag as shown in the image to remove the text from the password page.

When you’re finished, scroll back up to the top of the themes page and click the Save button. This action erases the “Powered by Shopify” from your Shopify store.
